Mighty Hawks
Mighty Hawks looks to close the gap of low employment of individuals with developmental disabilities and give them the resources, mentorship and confidence to overcome barriers in finding jobs.
The Mighty Hawks Story
In Canada, as low as 26% of individuals with a developmental disability have been able to obtain employment, in comparison to 79% of those without one. These individuals are known for their uniquely diverse skill sets and highly positive attitudes, but many face barriers that dissuade them from finding long-lasting employment.
At Mighty Hawks, we emphasize that a developmental disability does not define the scope of oneβs abilities. Our weekly workshops support each individual in the development of work-relevant and financial literacy skills with one-one-one support from our Mighty Hawks facilitators, a passionate group of students at Enactus Laurier. Week over week, the participants have shown amazing progress in their confidence with everything from budgeting their money more effectively, to building a resume, to answering the seemingly simple, but quite difficult question of βtell me about yourself.β Mighty Hawks is also now a part of Developmental Services Ontario, expanding its reach to more individuals in and across the region.
This year Mighty Hawks took it beyond the workshops. For the first time, the team has put together a very special networking event for the Mighty Hawk participants and any individuals in the Waterloo region with a developmental disability. The event brings together a variety of businesses, organizations and individuals of many abilities in the community to celebrate diversity, build connections and to get know each person as an individual, beyond their disability.
